Absentee Voting Under Way. Absentee voting continues at the clerk’s window and by mail on application through November 2. Thirty-one ballots issued in the first four days. Mailed ballots must be RECEIVED by the close of polls November 3.

Election Judges Needed. Six for November 3. Training one evening in October, compensated. Apply at the clerk’s window.

Candidate Forum. Thursday, October 8, 7 p.m., Legion hall. Three of five local candidates confirmed as of Monday.

School Board Vacancy. The third school board seat has no filed candidate and will be decided by write-in or, failing that, by board appointment. The district office can describe the duties to anyone who asks.

Public Meetings

City Council. Tuesday, October 6, 7 p.m., city hall. The Hagen recommendation — not to exceed sixteen residential lots, five conditions — comes before the council. Public comment received at the meeting. Nothing regarding the plat appears on the November ballot.

County Road Work. The county has posted its October schedule. Shoulder work on County 12 is listed for the first week of October, and the fourth stop sign at Birch and Second is listed for installation the week of October 12.

The Chair. The oak chair remains at the fire hall. Neither party has written to the other since July.

Fire & Burning

Burning Permits Suspended. Open burning permits remain suspended. The county fire danger rating has been HIGH for two weeks. Twenty-eight days without measurable rain as of this morning. Two grass fires this month, both along road shoulders, both started by material thrown from vehicles.

Church Notices

First Lutheran Church. Sunday worship 9 a.m., Rev. Karl Lindholm. Sermon: “On Patience,” Part Fourteen. Sunday school 9 a.m., forty-one enrolled. The “Chain of Lakes” quilt hangs in the basement through October.

Misquah Methodist Church. Worship 8 and 10:30 a.m., Rev. Tom Eckert. Confirmation, six students, Wednesdays at 6:30.

Permits & Records

Building permits. Issued: furnace replacement (3), chimney liner (2), dock removal (seasonal, 4). The office notes nine permits in a week and suggests this is what a hard frost does.

Marriage licenses. One issued this week.

Minutes & Records. The Hagen file — sixty-six comments, two sets of planning board minutes, and the clerk’s memorandum describing the August 25 transcription error — is with the council packet for October 6.

Dog licenses. Past due October 1. Eighty-four of an estimated hundred and forty are current.

Water. The city has no watering restriction in effect and none proposed. The public works department asks that residents on city water be mindful and notes that private wells along the county road are a separate system and a separate concern.
