Planning Board — Special Meeting Held. The planning board met in special session Thursday, September 3, and voted 4–1 to allow the motion adopted August 25 to stand as recorded. The recommendation forwarded to the council is for a preliminary plat not to exceed sixteen (16) residential lots, subject to five conditions. Complete minutes of both meetings are available at the clerk’s window.

City Council — Notice. The council meets Tuesday, October 6, 7 p.m., city hall, and will take up the Hagen recommendation. Public comment will be received at that meeting.

Fair Board. The Pine County Fair board meets tonight, September 8, 7 p.m., grounds office. Agenda: ice machine; shade structure; grandstand roof; Forest Club building request; 2027 dates.

Absentee Voting. Absentee voting for the November 3 general election opens Friday, September 18, at the clerk’s window and by mail on application. Sample ballots posted at city hall, the library and the Daybreak by month’s end.

The Chair — Status, Unchanged. The oak chair remains at the fire hall. October approaches.

Church Notices

First Lutheran Church. Sunday worship, 9 a.m., Rev. Karl Lindholm. Sermon: “On Patience,” Part Eleven. Sunday school begins September 13; teachers are in place for all grades, which the education committee reports has not happened since 2017. The basement roof fund entered its fifteenth year today.

Misquah Methodist Church. Sunday worship, 10:30 a.m., Rev. Tom Eckert. Sermon: “What We Do in September.” The 8 a.m. service resumes Sunday.

Vital Records & Permits

Building permits. Issued: furnace replacement, Third Ave.; re-roof, County 6; dock removal permit (seasonal), Loon Ridge. The office notes furnace permits in the first week of September are a reliable annual indicator and that this year there are four.

Marriage licenses. One issued this week.

Minutes & Records. The Hagen file, sixty-six comments plus two sets of minutes, goes to the council October 6. The clerk has appended a memorandum describing the August 25 transcription error and its correction history, unprompted, and asks that it travel with the file permanently.

Elections

Notice of General Election. The general election is Tuesday, November 3. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at city hall. On the ballot locally: two city council seats (Bunde, Wheeler, Lindgren) and three school board seats (Bratlie and Ferrell unopposed; one seat with no filed candidate). Absentee voting opens September 18.

Election Judges Wanted. Six needed. Training one evening in October, compensated. Apply at the clerk’s window.

Seasonal

Dock Removal. Seasonal dock removal permits are on file at the clerk’s office for those who require them. The Loon Ridge docks come out the second week of October; the public landing dock comes out the third, weather permitting, by the same four men who have done it since 2014.

Burning. Open burning requires a permit through the DNR through the end of October. The department notes fourteen days without rain and asks that people who have been thinking about a brush pile keep thinking about it.
