Elections

Absentee Voting Opens Friday. Absentee voting for the November 3 general election begins Friday, September 18, when city hall opens, in person at the clerk’s window or by mail on application. No reason is required. Mailed ballots must be RECEIVED by the clerk, not postmarked, by the close of polls November 3.

Sample Ballot Posted. The sample ballot is posted inside the front door at city hall and goes up at the library and the Daybreak this week.

Candidate Forum Set. The Chamber has set the candidate forum for Thursday, October 8, 7 p.m., Legion hall. All five local candidates invited; three confirmed as of Monday.

Public Meetings

County Fair Board. Met September 8. Set the 2027 fair for August 18–22. Ice machine referred to the winter meeting, second Tuesday of February, with replacement and repair quotations to be obtained. Forest Club request for expanded space granted in principle; sketch requested.

City Council. Regular meeting Tuesday, October 6, 7 p.m., city hall, will take up the planning board’s Hagen recommendation. Public comment received at the meeting.

School Facilities. A second facilities walk-through regarding September 25 is set for Wednesday, September 16. Not a public meeting; results will be reported.

Church Notices

First Lutheran Church. Sunday worship 9 a.m., Rev. Karl Lindholm. Sermon: “On Patience,” Part Thirteen. Sunday school 9 a.m., all grades, forty-one enrolled. The “Chain of Lakes” quilt hangs in the basement through October.

Misquah Methodist Church. Worship 8 and 10:30 a.m., Rev. Tom Eckert. Confirmation class begins Wednesday, six students.

Seasonal & Permits

Fire Danger. The county fire danger rating went to HIGH on Friday. Open burning permits are suspended until conditions change. Twenty-one days without measurable rain as of Monday.

Building permits. Issued: furnace replacement (2), Third Ave. and County 6; chimney liner, Birch St.; dock removal, Loon Ridge. The office notes four furnace permits in two weeks and suggests the rest of you make your calls now.

Marriage licenses. Two issued this week, both to couples who asked about October dates. The recorder notes October is historically the third-best month and that she has stopped saying so out loud.

Minutes & Records. The Hagen file, sixty-six comments and two sets of minutes, is with the council packet for October 6. The clerk’s memorandum regarding the August 25 transcription error travels with it.

Dog licenses. Due by October 1 at the clerk’s window. The office reports 61 of an estimated 140 are current, which is normal for September and irritating every year.
