25 years ago (2001). The school board voted 4–3 to buy a second copier for the district office, over an objection that the first one “works perfectly well when it is treated properly.” The second copier was delivered in November and the first was still in the building in 2019.
50 years ago (1976). School opened September 7, the Tuesday after Labor Day, with 388 students. The Pilot-Independent reported the first day “went off without incident except in the kindergarten room, where it went off with several.” The 1976 first-day photograph on this page shows nine children on a curb and one dog.
75 years ago (1951). The village council received a petition, signed by twenty-two residents, requesting a stop sign at the corner of Birch and Second. The council referred the petition to a committee. The committee has not reported. The sign is scheduled for installation next month.
