Last week’s account of the anniversary reported two hundred fourteen cards. A reader who declines to be named advises that at least one card was delivered twice, by two members of the same household who had each bought one and neither told the other. The Pilot-Independent declines to revise the figure, on the grounds that the count is a matter for the receipt spike and not for us.

Also, our story on the bear referred to the grain bin as “nosed but not breached.” The Holts wish it amplified that the bin was, in fact, latched and boring, and that they would like the bear to hear it that way. Corrections remain rare, and cheerfully entertained.

25 years ago (2001). The first Movie in the Park was rained out, moved to the school gym, and shown against a bedsheet, which the rec department reported “worked better than anyone wanted to admit.” The sheet was returned to its owner laundered.

50 years ago (1976). Sweet corn opened on County 12 the third week of July, ten days earlier than this year, and the Pilot-Independent noted the honor box had “not yet been disappointed in its tenth season.” It would not be disappointed publicly in fifty more.

75 years ago (1951). The county fair added a shaded rest area behind the exhibit halls after complaints about the August sun. It was dismantled the following year for reasons the minutes do not record. This year’s fair board, unaware, has added one.
