The Klatch & Living

Slice three or four cucumbers thin — the garden is drowning in them by now, so use the ones the neighbor left on your step. Salt them in a colander and let them sit half an hour to weep; press the water out with a clean towel, the way your grandmother did, and don’t skip it, or you’ll have soup.
For the dressing: half a cup of vinegar, a quarter cup of water, three tablespoons of sugar, a good shake of salt and pepper, dissolved together. Slice in a small onion, thin. Pour over the cucumbers and chill an hour at least. A little fresh dill if you have it; sour cream stirred in at the end if you want it richer, though then it will not keep, and the whole point of this one, in July, is that it keeps. It is the opposite of the potato salad in every way that matters, including survival.

The Week in the Stars
As read by Sigrid Pelto, from the end of her dock on Loon Lake — usually close.
The Sun has come home to Leo just as the smoke clears from the fireworks, and the season turns from water to fire, from the lake to the long warm middle of the summer. The Moon wanes after its bright holiday turn, kind now to quiet work and second thoughts. Mercury favors newcomers — a banker, a brewery, a moose — and Venus, as ever, smiles on the cradle: the sign will read two higher by the time Earl gets to it.
Aries
Mar 21–Apr 19Fire · I Am
The parade has a grand marshal now, and rules, and a lineup time. You may grieve the old free-for-all; you may also show up at 11:30. Do both. Order is not the enemy of joy, only its chaperone.
Taurus
Apr 20–May 20Earth · I Have
A brewery rises where the creamery stood, in a room your paper once measured for a press. Nothing here is ever only one thing. Hold what lasts; let the building have its fourth life.
Gemini
May 21–Jun 20Air · I Think
A moose came to Little Pelican and left without explaining himself, which you might study. Not every arrival owes you a reason. Let the strange visitor be strange, and be glad you saw it.
Cancer
Jun 21–Jul 22Water · I Feel
Two babies, no funerals, the sign going up by two. Your season ends on the kindest arithmetic the town has had in a while. Sit in it. You, of all the signs, know how to feel a thing fully.
Leo
Jul 23–Aug 22Fire · I Will
The Sun comes home to you with the fireworks barely cold. Shine — but the parade that worked best this week was the one that slowed down. Lead at an idle. They will follow further than you think.
Virgo
Aug 23–Sep 22Earth · I Analyze
The Peterson roof gets fixed before it fails, which is the whole of your gospel in one barn. Mend the thing now, while mending is still cheaper than mourning. Someone you love has a roof going too.
Libra
Sep 23–Oct 22Air · I Balance
A new neighbor arrives meaning to stay and stand out at once. Make room. Balance this week is not splitting the difference; it is widening the table until the newcomer fits, and then forgetting she ever didn’t.
Scorpio
Oct 23–Nov 21Water · I Desire
The deep walleye bite early and sulk by ten, which is also you, and you know it. Take what the depths give in the first cool hour. Do not wait for the lake, or the day, to come around to you.
Sagittarius
Nov 22–Dec 21Fire · I Aim
The fair’s entry books are out; the pumpkins are already at war. Aim at something this month, even something foolish and enormous. The point was never the pumpkin. The point was tending a thing all summer.
Capricorn
Dec 22–Jan 19Earth · I Build
A bank changes hands; a barn keeps its roof; a brewery is nearly built. The town is putting things up and keeping things standing. Build, or mend — either counts. Idle hands fix no roofs.
Aquarius
Jan 20–Feb 18Air · I Know
No obituaries again, and you, who prefers a fact to a feeling, will feel the blank page anyway. Let yourself. Some weeks the kindest news is the news that isn’t there. Don’t analyze the relief. Just take it.
Pisces
Feb 19–Mar 20Water · I Dream
The official boats ran at noon; the dreamers’ boats still drift out at dusk, ungoverned, just because. Be a dusk boat this week. The schedule will hold the daylight. The evening, as ever, is yours.
On Your Big Three. A reminder from Sigrid: your Sun is who you are at the Daybreak counter; your Moon is who you are at two in the morning when the wind comes up off the lake; your Rising is who the new bank president thinks you are, before she knows better. Readings Tuesdays at the end of my dock, weather and coffee permitting.
By Sigrid Pelto. Wednesday night is the night. The Perseids peak in the small hours of Thursday with a new moon staying entirely out of it, and if you have been waiting all summer for one dark, clear, unhurried sky, this is the one the year owes you. Face northeast, get away from the streetlight, allow twenty minutes for the eyes, and do not look at a telephone — one glance undoes the twenty minutes. A lawn chair reclines; a dock is better. Peak is between midnight and dawn, and the hour before dawn is the honest one. One arrived early Friday over the movie screen. That was not the show. That was the usher.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). You will want to organize the meteor watching. Do not. Meteors are the one event that improves without a chairman.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). The jars are done or they are not. Wednesday night, go outside anyway. The fair will still be eight days off when you come back in.
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). A sealed envelope sits four blocks from a covered sign. You of all people can wait four days. Practice on Wednesday, under the sky, saying nothing.
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The loons are flying every morning and one page in a notebook says LEAVING with nothing under it. Some things you watch without needing them explained.
Filed Sunday from the dock, moon absent, prospects excellent. It comes out Tuesday.
Mother’s Refrigerator Pickles (not fair pickles). For the woman who decides on Thursday that she needs pickles. Slice six cups of cucumbers thin with one sliced onion; salt them in a bowl for an hour and drain what comes out. Bring to a boil: one cup vinegar, three-quarters cup sugar, a teaspoon of mustard seed, half a teaspoon of celery seed, a half teaspoon of turmeric. Pour it over hot, cool on the counter, then into the refrigerator. Ready in a day, best in three, gone in five. They are not entered in anything. They do not have to be.
The Box’s standing request to the truck at the landing remains standing, and remains kindly declined. We renew it herewith, as is our custom, expecting nothing.
By Sigrid Pelto. Mercury stationed direct Thursday last, and the week’s haze notwithstanding, the sky has resumed answering its mail. Expect the gym clock to make amends, misplaced items to surface in the second place you look, and at least one apology to arrive that was drafted in early July. The Sun is in Leo, which explains the sunsets’ sense of theater; do not encourage them further.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). Your element is in the news for the wrong reasons. Keep yours banked, per the county notice, and let the sky do the performing.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). The corn is in. You knew it would be. Resist saying so more than twice.
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). Your element returns Wednesday. Open every window in the house at once; it counts as hospitality.
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The lake is 74° and holding your spot. A loon has shown you the week’s lesson: run at the thing until it becomes flying.
Filed Sunday from the dock, visibility poor, certainty unaffected. It comes out Tuesday.
