Wed., Aug. 12. THE PERSEIDS peak overnight into Thursday, new moon, best in years. Northeast, twenty minutes for the eyes, no telephones. The hour before dawn is the honest one.

Thu., Aug. 13. Band camp lawn concert, school lawn, 7 p.m., under an hour, on purpose. Chairs marked underneath. Mr. Brekke conducts one number and is thanked briefly, per terms.

Thu., Aug. 13. Ladies’ Aid, First Lutheran, 1 p.m. The fair-bound quilts leave for the grounds after final pillowcase inspection, per the sheet, per what happened to the Dresden Plate. The Aid is also thanked, in person and inadequately, for feeding two hundred on Saturday with four pans that arrived unasked.

Fri., Aug. 14. Legion baseball, SEASON CLOSER, Post 162 vs. Braham, home, 7:15 p.m. Last home game for four seniors; families recognized before the first pitch, briefly, per Dolen.

Sat., Aug. 15. THE BREWERY OPENS — 2 p.m., Second Avenue. Canvas off at two sharp, or when the knot gives. The sealed envelope travels four blocks and is opened at the bar.

Coming Up

Mon., Aug. 17. Pike football two-a-days begin, 29 out — helmets Monday, pads Wednesday, per the league’s acclimatization rule, which coaches complain about publicly and follow gratefully. Mornings and evenings; the middle of the day is surrendered to August. Volleyball and cross country open the same week.

Tue., Aug. 18. HAGEN COMMENT CLOSES, 4:30 p.m., clerk’s window. Four-thirty means four-thirty.

Wed.–Sun., Aug. 19–23. THE COUNTY FAIR. Halls judged Wednesday, open 4 p.m.; midway from Thursday noon; livestock Thursday–Saturday; giant-pumpkin weigh-in Saturday the 22nd, 10 a.m.; exhibit pickup Sunday 6 p.m., not optional.

Fri., Aug. 21. Football scrimmage, home, evening, free admission. The field has been cut twice this week and looks, from the road, like the best it has looked in three summers — the one part of the program that had a perfect July.

Tue., Aug. 25. Planning board special meeting — the Hagen recommendation — 7 p.m., city hall.

Fri., Aug. 28. Summer reading finale, 2 p.m., the library. Certificates, ice cream, a blank space above the eagle tier, and — doctors permitting, doctors advised — Mrs. Aune.

Sun., Aug. 23. Fair closes, 6 p.m., with exhibit pickup immediately following. Ribbons, jars, quilts, and photographs all go home the same evening; the board asks that nothing be left for Monday, and the board asks every year.

Mon., Aug. 31. Bus routes posted and mailed. The Loon Ridge Road stop moved last spring and has stayed moved.

Tue., Sep. 2. First day of school, the day after Labor Day. Thirty-one kindergartners in two sections; Room 6 has been ready since May and will tell you so.
