Selected from the week’s calls to the Sheriff’s northern substation and the Misquah first responders. Names withheld where charges were not filed, which is nearly always.

Monday. Report of brown water on Birch Street. Caller advised, again, that the hydrant flushing two weeks ago was the cause, that the water is safe, and that running the cold tap clears it. Caller thanked the deputy and, the clerk suspects, will call again in July.

Tuesday. Welfare check, Second Avenue, on a resident who turned out to be at the lake, as a resident in late June generally is. No further action.

Wednesday. Report of a black bear on Loon Island following a weekend gathering. Determined to have swum, dined, and departed (see front page). No charges, the bear being beyond the substation’s reach and, by most accounts, its jurisdiction.

Wednesday. Noise complaint, the lake, regarding a personal watercraft operating “with enthusiasm” near the loon nest on the north end. Operator located, advised of the chicks, and reported genuinely chastened.

Friday. Traffic control assistance requested for the Saturday parade route. Granted. The route, as ever, is Main Street, there being no other.

Saturday. Lost property along the parade route: one cooler, one lawn chair, one pair of sunglasses, and a quantity of dignity, the last being unrecoverable.

Saturday. Report of fireworks near Bass Lake, eleven days early. Party advised the Fourth is the Fourth. Party advised they were “just checking they still worked.” They did.

Sunday. Found dog, Daybreak lot, friendly, no collar. Held at the fire hall pending its people, who are presumed to be looking and are advised it has been eating well.
