The Second Week Looked More Like School
Attendance back to 97 percent, buses within five minutes of posted times, and kindergarten through its first full week without an incident anybody thought worth reporting.

MISQUAH — Attendance at Lakeside was about 97 percent Monday, up from 91 the Tuesday after Labor Day and back to where the district expects it to sit until the first week of deer season.
The bus adjustments made over Labor Day weekend have held. No route was more than five minutes off its posted time Monday morning, which transportation reports is within the ordinary range and which is the first week this year that sentence has been true.
Kindergarten completed its first full week, thirty-one children across two sections, including four afternoon rest periods that Kara Lindvall describes as “three good ones and a Thursday.” Nothing else about the week produced a phone call to the office, which is the measure that matters.
The pre–Labor Day start, which occupied a good deal of space in this newspaper through August, has stopped being a subject. The district reports it took four calls about the calendar the week of September 2 and none at all last week.
Picture day is tomorrow. Envelopes went home the first week of the month; the office reports it has received about a third of them back, which at this point in September it describes as “ahead of pace, which means nothing.”
The office also notes the first genuinely ordinary lost-and-found week of the year: two jackets, one water bottle, a retainer in a napkin, and a single mitten, in September, which nobody can account for.
