Forms, Fee, Toes: Physicals Are Wednesday, and the Practice Times Go Up With Them

The fall seasons begin the way they always do — in a line at the Lakeside gym with paperwork and socks. Denny Dahl posts practice schedules the same week, and the first whistle of autumn is officially in sight.

Fall arrives at Lakeside the same way every year: not with the leaves, but with a line of student-athletes at the gym on physicals day, forms in hand, fee in envelope, shoes in a pile by the door. This year’s edition is Wednesday, August 5, from 3 to 7 p.m., and the drill is unchanged — forms available at the office and the usual counters around town, the fee unchanged for the sixth year, and the toes, as the checklist has put it since before anyone can say why, “visible on request.”

Practice schedules post the same week, per tradition, on the gym doors and in this newspaper’s School Notes. Denny Dahl, who coordinates the posting and coaches the Pike rec nine, describes the document as “the first honest sign of fall,” and reports that the schedules are, as of press time, “written, correct, and hidden from me by the copier, in that order.” They will be up by Wednesday regardless, he promises, “even if I have to write them out by hand, which is how we did it when the handwriting was better.”

The football and volleyball seasons open with practices in mid-August, cross country begins wherever the coach parks, and the full fall calendar — including the first home dates — runs in School Notes as soon as the leagues finalize it. Athletic families are reminded that a physical on file is required before the first practice, not the first game, a distinction the office restates annually and enforces annually to annual surprise.

Superintendent Dale Brandt, surveying the approach of his favorite season, offered the outlook he offers every August. “The building’s ready, the fields are mowed, and the class lists go out in two weeks,” he said. “You can’t run a school on hope, but August is when you’re allowed to try.”
