Third-grade classroom bulletin board and desks
Room 6, where a third-grader caught the paper’s arithmetic error. — Pilot-Independent file photo

Room 6. Our September 8 edition reported that the bulletin board outside Room 6 was filled with drawings of a house and itemized them: four houses, nine with a lake behind them, eleven with an animal in front, six that were not houses, and one boat. Those figures total thirty-one. There are twenty-four children in Room 6. The itemization was wrong and the total was wrong, and the correct figures are three, seven, eight, five and one, which total twenty-four. The boat is accurate.

The error was noticed by a third-grader, who counted, and reported to her teacher, who reported it to this newspaper by telephone on Wednesday and asked that the child be credited, which we are pleased to do without printing her name because her mother would prefer we didn’t.

Corrections are printed in this space whenever we have them. Errors may be reported at the office, by telephone, or in the doorway of the Daybreak.
