Final Week of Band Camp Moves Into the Gym, Where the Melody Not Only Survives but Echoes

The smoke relocated the last mornings indoors, the green-and-gold acoustics added what Director Moe calls “free reverb,” and the lawn concert is confirmed for Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m., air permitting.

Band camp’s final week of mornings, which by rights belonged to the school lawn, moved into the gym on Monday by order of the air-quality advisory, and the melody — positively identified outdoors just last week — not only made the trip but discovered amplification. “The gym gives you everything back,” said director Hannah Moe, conducting her first summer. “Twice, sometimes. We are learning to want that.”

The move indoors returned the band to the room where camp began in its loudest and worst week, a homecoming the students noted with the clear-eyed historical sense of the young. “We sounded like this in here in July,” said one trombonist, unprompted, “and now we sound like this,” a distinction he illustrated with two gestures that this newspaper found completely convincing.

Attendance held through the week despite the weather’s best efforts, aided by the gym’s two box fans — borrowed, Moe confirmed, from Sorensen Hardware’s final stock — and by a rumor, allowed to persist, that the last day involved popsicles. It did. The popsicles were conducted in 4/4.

The summer’s work now points at a single date: the lawn concert, confirmed for Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m., on the actual lawn, weather and air permitting, folding chairs welcome, program “short on purpose.” Phil Brekke, who directed this band for thirty-one years and now holds the somewhat different podium of Spelldown pronouncer, is expected in the audience, where sources close to the matter report he intends to sit on his hands and let it be Moe’s night. “They found the melody in week two,” Moe said, looking at the gym as if the lawn were already under it. “August is for finding out it was ours the whole time.”
