Burn Ban

Notice of Restriction. By order of the county, effective immediately and until rescinded: all open burning is prohibited, including yard waste, brush piles, and recreational fires, campfires included. Gas grills permitted. The full text stands at the clerk’s window and the fire hall; Chief Sundberg’s abridgment (“don’t”) is endorsed as the official short form and has been, the department notes, its most complied-with publication to date.

Public Meetings & Municipal Affairs

Notice of Special Meeting. The Misquah Planning Board will meet Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., city hall meeting room, to consider its recommendation regarding the proposed eighteen-lot plat, Hagen property. Written comment is accepted through Tuesday, August 18, addressed to Clerk Skoglund; thirty-one written comments are on file to date, several with citations. The board requests that additional chairs not be necessary and declines to say whether that is a forecast or a wish.

The Chair — Status. The oak chair that summers at the city hall by long arrangement has been removed to the fire hall six weeks ahead of custom, under a claim of “elevated operational tempo” (see News). The city’s position is on file with the clerk. The arrangement, being unwritten, remains in force in both directions, and the office expects the matter to resolve in October by the usual method, which is silence.

Church Notices

First Lutheran Church. Sunday worship, 9 a.m., Rev. Karl Lindholm. Sermon: “On Patience,” Part Five. The reverend observes that the week’s sky has provided the illustration at no charge, and that the series will conclude “when the subject does.” Ladies’ Aid Thursday at 1; fair-bound quilts to be pillowcased per the sheet. The basement roof fund continues in year fourteen, patiently, which the reverend submits is the assigned reading.

Misquah Methodist Church. Sunday worship, 10:30 a.m., Rev. Tom Eckert. Sermon: “Clear Skies, Eventually.” The reverend notes the newly repaved lot has shed the week’s ash “admirably,” and that the lines remain very straight, a fact he mentions only because it is true.

Vital Records & Permits

Building permits. Issued: re-roof, 214 Birch Street; deck repair, Loon Lake east shore; interior alterations, old Co-op creamery, Second Avenue (Hagen Construction — no relation, as the office is now asked weekly). The projecting sign on Second Avenue remains installed, covered, and the subject of steady inquiry; the office continues to refer all questions to the canvas, which has not answered.

Marriage licenses. None issued this week. The office restates its finding that August, historically, makes up for July, and notes that this year August has extra reasons.

Minutes & Records. The Hagen comment file has been promoted to its own drawer, bringing the municipal record to two drawers and one folder standing upright. Clerk Skoglund reports the standing folder is the smoke advisory, filed vertically “so it knows it’s temporary.”
