MISQUAH — A classified in this week’s paper offering “two canoe paddles, one opinion” has drawn appreciative notice around town, the seller clarifying, when asked, that the opinion “may be included with purchase but is not priced separately,” and that prospective buyers should be prepared to receive it whether or not they want it.

The paddles — a matched wooden pair, lightly used, the seller insists — come with the strong and freely offered views of their owner, a longtime canoeist who has reached the stage of life at which a person can no longer hand over a piece of equipment without also handing over instruction on its proper use. “He can’t help it,” said a neighbor familiar with the listing. “You go to buy the paddles, you’re going to hear about your stroke. You’re going to hear about feathering. You’re going to hear that you’re holding it wrong before you’ve even paid. The opinion comes with. He’s being honest in the ad, which I respect.”

The seller, reached and entirely unrepentant, confirmed the arrangement. “The paddles are good paddles,” he said. “Whoever buys them should know how to use them, and if they don’t, I’ll tell them, free of charge, as part of the transaction. You don’t sell a man a good paddle and let him ruin it with a bad stroke. That would be wrong. The opinion is a courtesy. The fact that nobody asked for it is beside the point.”

As of Thursday the paddles remained available, and the opinion, the seller confirmed, remained “in full supply, and growing.” Interested parties are advised to allow extra time.
