MISQUAH — The second of Big Pelican’s juvenile loons has not gone.

Greta Solberg, 12, checked Saturday morning from the north end, Sunday after church and Monday before school. The bird was there each time. It is flying, it is feeding itself, and it has been ranging toward the narrows and back in the way it has since August.

Its sibling left the night of September 5 into the 6, unwitnessed, which is how they go.

There is no way to know when this one will follow, and anybody who tells you otherwise is guessing with more confidence than the facts allow. Two weeks after the first is common. Six is not unusual. Some years a juvenile is still on open water in November, and every few years one waits too long and the lake decides for it.
