To the Editor: I write to inform your readers that I will not be responding to the letter that appeared in this newspaper last week. I was raised better than to conduct family business on a letters page, an upbringing I mention only because the question of upbringing has lately been raised, by implication, across the bay.

I will therefore not be addressing the suggestion that certain persons “did not write letters” after last August, an assertion your readers may weigh against the fact that they are currently reading such persons’ second letter in three weeks. I will not be revisiting the appeal, which was filed on principle, denied on technicality, and is behind us, where I have graciously put it and where I keep it, in a folder, with the weigh slip. And I most certainly will not be responding to the advice that I “mind the scale,” beyond observing that some of us have always minded it, which is precisely how certain readings came to our attention in the first place.

Having said none of that, I would like to use my remaining space constructively, as a letters page should be used, and offer the community a brief report from our garden, since interest in area horticulture appears to run high this season.

The vines this year are healthy. I will not elaborate. I will say only that my husband has reinforced the garden cart, that we have moved up our tarp order, and that the fence gate has been widened, as a general maintenance matter, by fourteen inches. Readers may draw what conclusions they like. The weigh-in is the final Saturday of the fair, at ten o’clock, on the recertified scale, which suits us fine, as we have nothing to fear from accurate equipment and never did.

I thank the editor for the space, and my neighbor for her good wishes, which I return in exactly the spirit offered.
