The Blotter

From the BlotterSelected from the week’s calls to the Sheriff’s northern substation and the Misquah first responders. Names are withheld where charges were not filed, which this week is everyone, including a rope.Wednesday, 11:50 p.m. Caller reported “people in the ditch” on the Loon Ridge Road. Deputy Vang located eleven persons in lawn chairs in the ditch, facing northeast, watching the Perseids. All were sober, all were prepared, and one offered the deputy a folding chair, which the report notes he declined and then, thirty minutes later, accepted. No action. Meteor count entered as “good.”Thursday, 10:20 p.m. Report of a crowd at the public landing after dark. Determined to be approximately ninety persons who had walked down from the school concert with their own chairs. Deputy stood by. Nothing occurred that anyone wished to stop.Saturday, 1:15 p.m. Traffic on Second Avenue reduced to one lane by pedestrians. Deputy Vang closed the block between Birch and Third at the request of nobody, having concluded that the alternative was worse. The block reopened at 4:40 p.m. No citations. The deputy notes he has closed that street twice in eleven years, and that the other time was a parade.Saturday, 2:02 p.m. A knot failed to give. No offense. Resolved by the timely production of a pocketknife by a member of the public, who declined to be thanked and returned to the crowd.Saturday, 6:35 p.m. Report of a vehicle blocking the alley behind Second Avenue. Vehicle identified as a food truck operating with permission, sold out, and remaining open on a nonprofit basis. Caller, informed of this, requested chips. Chips were, per the operator, for everyone.Sunday, 8:05 a.m. Caller reported “all the loons together at the north end, something’s wrong.” Confirmed as ordinary staging behavior (see Lakes). Nothing is wrong. The desk notes this is the first such call of the season and expects, per past years, eleven more.Sunday, 4:40 p.m. A goat was reported at large near County 6. The goat was gone on arrival. Thirteenth non-meeting. A deputy has begun leaving a carrot on the fence post, an initiative the substation describes as “unauthorized but understandable.”Monday, 9:12 a.m. Report of a man reading a newspaper aloud to another man outside the Pilot-Independent office. Determined to be a discussion of Saturday. No offense; the office confirms it sold out of Tuesday’s run by Wednesday for the first time since the smoke week and has printed extra for tomorrow.
