To the Editor:

We are twenty-eight days without rain, the fire danger sign says HIGH, the burning permits are suspended, and I counted four sprinklers running on Third Avenue at two in the afternoon on Saturday.

Two in the afternoon. In September. On grass that quit in August and is not coming back until May no matter what anybody does to it.

I am aware that nobody is breaking a law. There is no watering restriction in this city and I am not asking for one, because I have seen what happens when this council tries to write a rule about anything and I would like my water and my dignity both. I am asking people to look out a window and think for one minute about where that water comes from.

The well driller in this paper says three of his four calls are pumps running longer than they did in June. That is where it comes from. It is the same water.

My lawn is brown. My neighbor's lawn is brown. We are fine. The lawn is not a person.
