To the Editor:

I coach volleyball and I am writing about cross country, which I recognize is unusual, and I am writing because Mark Koski has been asking politely for three years and it has not worked.

The girls do not have five runners. They have three. Three girls have been getting up on Saturday mornings and running a race that does not count, because a team score requires five and nobody has come out.

I hear the same two things every fall. That the girls in this school are busy, which is true. And that cross country is hard, which is also true and is not a reason, because everything worth doing at that age is hard and we manage to field a volleyball team.

I have eleven girls on my junior varsity who are not playing on Saturdays. I am not going to pretend I would be glad to lose two of them. I would not. I am saying out loud that if two of them went, I would still have a team and Mark would have one for the first time since 2023, and one of those changes is bigger than the other.

The home meet is Saturday at ten on the pavilion course. Go watch three girls run a race that does not count, and then tell me whether it should.
