To the Editor:

I want to say first that I did not tape up the grouse sheet, and I want to say second that I know who did, and third that I am not going to tell you.

What I will say is that I have been watching that window for forty years and it does the same thing every fall without anybody organizing it. The fair sheet goes up in August and comes down in September. The grouse sheet goes up and needs a second page. The deer sheet goes up in November and the handwriting on it gets worse every year, which I attribute to the cold and to the fact that men my age are writing it.

Somebody at the counter last week called it a sign-up sheet and got corrected by three people at once. It is not a sign-up. Nobody is in charge of it. Nobody has ever been in charge of it. If you write your name under somebody else's name you have not joined anything and you have not been invited, and four people did that last week and all four found out at the counter.

I have no complaint. I am writing because a man from Sandstone asked me in August why this town does not have a website for that sort of thing, and I have been thinking about the question for a month, and my answer is that a website cannot be argued with at seven in the morning by four people standing in front of it with coffee.
