Bjornstad’s measurements, seed catalogs and State Fair tag return to the workbench with him. — Pilot-Independent photo

To the Editor:

The pumpkin did not place.

This is not a complaint.

I took it to St. Paul because a county-record pumpkin can make a man stupid if he does not occasionally park it beside a better one.

There were better ones.

I measured several things I had not been measuring and saw two sling arrangements worth copying and one I will not copy because the grower who built it had to crawl underneath it to remove a strap, and there are limits.

M. Aakre was right in his letter last week that the vine is the thing and not the fruit. I am willing to put that in print because he was right in print.

The county scale gave me a record. The State Fair gave me perspective. I recommend both, though not necessarily in the same weekend.

The scale has had enough of us for one year.

I have seeds.
