Help Wanted

POSITIONS FILLED. The brewery on Second Avenue has hired its opening crew. The Holts thank all applicants and report the smelling-distance interviews “told us most of what we needed.” The crew begins training this week; the name on the sign remains none of anyone’s business until August.

HELP WANTED — ENTRY SATURDAY. The fair office still seeks one clerk for the final morning. Must write legibly, count to two dollars repeatedly, and hold the line at noon while being told a story. Calm remains the qualification; the story, this year, was reportedly excellent.

For Sale

SOLD. The six folding chairs advertised last week have sold — to the fire hall, which declines to elaborate. The household thanks recent municipal demand and suggests others check their garages while the market lasts.

FOR SALE. Canning lids, wide-mouth, three boxes. The corn is in and the market has turned, as forecast. Price unchanged; urgency transferred to the buyer. See Marlys, mornings.

FOR SALE. Canning jars, quarts and pints, some older than the buyer will be. Priced to move before entry day. Call after supper; if no answer, we are at the landing, watching the sky like everyone else.

Free & Fair Warning

THIRD NOTICE — ZUCCHINI. Bread season has begun, as forecast, on schedule, indoors. Loaves now move by the same routes the squash pioneered (see Eunice; see your own porch, in daylight this time). The box at the Dahlquist step accepts both forms. The walnuts are not optional, and the box knows who you are.

FREE — UPDATE. The gray kittens of Loon Ridge Road have been claimed as a set, by a household that came for one. The record supports their strategy. No kittens remain; the road reports itself quieter and slightly poorer for it.

Lost & Found

RETURNED. The folding music stand missing since the melody excitement came back Wednesday, in the correct vehicle, during the move indoors. The section’s celebrating privileges are restored. Lakeside thanks the town for two weeks of vigilance applied to a music stand.

CLAIMED. The tackle box, net, and good rod found at the landing have been claimed. The reel question settled it in one, as promised. Owner and rod are reunited and both described as relieved; the finder accepted coffee and refused everything else.

LOST. One lawn chair, plaid webbing, public landing, believed left at Tuesday’s sunset in the general emotion. This is the fourth chair to enter the record this summer. The desk continues to decline to speculate, but notes the chairs know something.

Wanted & Services

WANTED — RENEWED. Lawn chairs on loan for the August 13 band concert. The school owns forty; the town, on all recent evidence, is a two-hundred-chair audience that arrives early. Tape and a name on the underside; the casserole rules apply.

WANTED. Box fan, any condition, cash waiting. Will also consider standing in front of yours by appointment. Rotation terms negotiable; references from Third Street available. — T. (yes, that T.)

YARD WORK. Responsible sixth-grader, rates unchanged, references growing. The smoke week moved all appointments indoors, where the sixth-grader reports the work is called “chores” and pays worse. Outdoor bookings resume Wednesday, wind permitting.

Notices

IN MEMORY OF GORDY. Still runs. Still fixed everything. — the classifieds, standing

THANK YOU. The family of Arvid Paulson thanks this town for sixty summers of showing up by nine, and for last Saturday, when it showed up anyway. The stand is open. He was clear about that. — the Paulsons
