From the BlotterSelected from the week’s calls to the Sheriff’s northern substation and the Misquah first responders. Names are withheld where charges were not filed, which this week is everyone, including the porcupine.Wednesday, 4:15 p.m. Report of a vehicle parked across two spaces at the fairgrounds. Vehicle identified as a flatbed trailer with a tarped object on it. Owner advised. Owner explained. Owner was permitted to remain across two spaces for the duration of the fair, a decision the deputy stands by.Thursday, 3:22 p.m. Caller reported “an animal loose in the Forest Club building.” Confirmed. Conservation officer responded and advised opening the pen and stepping back, which worked. Total distance covered by the animal, per witnesses: nine feet. Total elapsed time: fifty minutes. No injuries. The corn dog was recovered by its owner.Friday, 10:52 p.m. Noise complaint, fairgrounds. Determined to be the grandstand reacting to a tractor pull decided by fourteen inches. No violation. The deputy remained for the last three hooks and declines to characterize this as anything other than traffic control.Friday, 11:40 p.m. Report of “kids sitting in the grass by the pole barn, a lot of them, not moving.” Deputy located eleven members of the Pike football team in postures of regret following ten consecutive rides on the Zipper. All were conscious, none required assistance, and one was eating a corn dog in front of the others, which the deputy noted in the log without comment.Saturday, 9:58 p.m. Multiple calls reporting an explosion east of town. Determined to be the fireworks finale, which ran three minutes long. Chief Sundberg has accepted responsibility and has been congratulated by everyone who called.Sunday, 2:40 p.m. Report of a vehicle in the ditch on the fairgrounds road. Vehicle was a demolition derby car being towed to the arena and was, by design, already in poor condition. The tow continued. The derby ran.Sunday, 5:05 p.m. Caller reported someone “taking a quilt out of the hall in the rain under a garbage bag.” Determined to be exhibit pickup, which the fair board describes as not optional. No offense. Approximately four hundred people did the same thing within the hour.Monday, 6:50 a.m. A goat was reported at large near County 6. The goat was gone on arrival. Fourteenth non-meeting. The carrot left on the fence post last week was taken. The substation declines to draw a conclusion.Saturday, 9:35 p.m. Multiple callers reported fireworks. Confirmed: fireworks, scheduled, announced in this newspaper twice. The desk logs the calls each year and each year notes that the callers are not complaining, they are checking, which is a different thing and a nicer one.Sunday, 3:05 p.m. Report of a bucket truck operating at the fairgrounds in the rain with a crowd around it. Determined to be the recovery of a porcupine from a jack pine. Deputy assisted with crowd control and reports the crowd was larger than the one at the tractor pull, better behaved, and entirely unwilling to disperse until the animal was down.
