The Board Meets Tonight, With Sixty-Six Comments Behind It
Written comment closed a week ago at 4:30. The planning board takes up its recommendation on the eighteen-lot plat at 7 p.m. at city hall, in the room with the folding chairs, and the clerk has counted the chairs.
MISQUAH — The Misquah Planning Board meets tonight at 7 p.m. at city hall to settle the recommendation it sends to the council on North Pine’s proposed eighteen-lot plat on the old Hagen pasture, closing a public process that opened in July and produced sixty-six written comments, two file drawers, and a summer’s worth of conversation.
Clerk Donna Skoglund’s subject summary went to the five members the Wednesday before the fair. Her tally of recurring concerns, offered without characterization: the county road’s shoulder, septic and well capacity, what eighteen docks would mean for the bay, and taxes — which appear in comments on both sides and mean opposite things in each.
The final count broke down as sixty-six comments from fifty-eight households, which the clerk notes is itself a fact worth reporting: eight households wrote twice. Comment is closed and will not be reopened tonight. The public may attend and, per the board’s procedure for a special meeting on a closed record, may not speak, a rule Chairman Ross Vig will state at the opening and which will be tested at least once, as it was in July.
Ald. Pete Hagen remains recused and has been recused since June, a discipline that has cost him a summer of conversations he would ordinarily be at the center of and which he has kept without visible complaint. Vig, who has read everything twice and said nothing publicly since the hearing, opens the meeting. Whatever the board decides goes to the council this fall.
Thirty-eight chairs are set. In July they needed all of them and stood eleven people along the back wall. The clerk has put out forty-four.
