Advertising Standards
Advertising keeps a local paper local. It does not buy a vote in the newsroom.
Clear labels
Paid messages are labeled as advertising or sponsored material. Ads should not be designed to look like an unsigned news story.
Editorial separation
Advertisers do not receive advance approval of unrelated coverage and cannot condition an ad buy on favorable news treatment. News staff may report on an advertiser when the advertiser is part of the news.
Local preference, not local immunity
We favor businesses and organizations serving the Chain because that is who our readers use. We may decline deceptive, unlawful or misleading advertising.
Digital advertising
Programmatic ads are kept out of the middle of story text whenever practical. Local display ads receive preference on the front page and section fronts.
